The EULETA External-Speaker Training Series features speakers who are experts in their fields and external to EULETA. The talks are on topics which are connected to our work as legal English teachers and which help our continued professional development.
Our next external speaker training event will be on Tuesday 8th October 2024 from 6 pm to 7.30 pm CET.
Lisa Lipsky will be speaking about Plain language and the legal profession’s struggle with simplicity.
About Lisa Lipsky's talk
Lawyers and non-lawyers alike have been arguing against complicated legal language for decades; and yet, despite the rise of the plain language movement, demonstrated benefits of using plain language and emerging regulatory requirements mandating plain language in certain documents, the legal profession still clings to traditional, complicated drafting styles. Lisa will share her views from a private legal practice perspective on lawyers’ reluctance to embrace plain language, the barriers to change, and what it will take for lawyers to see that with plain language they can offer clients more with less.
You will be invited to share your ideas on quantifying the tangible benefits of plain language and getting plain language buy-in from lawyers.
About Lisa Lipsky
Lisa is a former practising solicitor (admitted in England and Wales, and in Australia), and has worked as a transactional lawyer in Australia, Russia and France, and also as a knowledge support lawyer. Although no longer working as a lawyer, she continues to work in private legal practice in a role that involves a significant amount of content drafting. She is passionate about plain language and strives to change how lawyers communicate, challenging traditional
approaches to legal writing and setting a standard and discipline of simple but effective plain language communication.
