Jim spent upwards of forty years in TEFL, the latter half of that time focussing on legal English - to strengthen which he gained an LLB (London, distance learning). He taught in various settings: Senanga (Zambia). London, Madrid, Bucharest, Hamburg, Augsburg, Greifswald. Ultimately came the opportunity to set up, and for 13 years run, a foreign languages department at a university for legal studies in his adopted home city (Bucerius Law School, Hamburg).
Besides testing and providing meaningful feedback on the oral and written output of, usually, highly competent users of English, the specifically legal aspects of Jim's work included designing and running specialised courses, coaching mooting teams (Vis Moot), training legal practitioners, translation, instructing in the language of contract drafting. He also accompanied student groups on legal London tours, established and managed a Cambridge UCLES centre for the then ILEC (International Legal English Certificate), and authored a textbook (Legal Matters: Cornelsen) for trainee legal assistants.
